Kensington Leisure Centre soft play is £8.25 an hour and the Science Museum's Garden is free. 12 rainy-day places with prices, ages and hours checked.
The soft play most Kensington families land on is the one at Kensington Leisure Centre in North Kensington (£8.25 an hour for ages 2 to 10), with Gambado on Townmead Road the big commercial option. On a wet day the free answer is South Kensington: the Science Museum’s Garden and Pattern Pod and the Natural History Museum. Every entry was checked against the venue’s own site on 28 October 2026.
We have not been to these places to test them and nothing here is a ranking. Each entry sets out what the venue publishes: prices, ages, opening hours, booking rules and facilities, with the Food Standards Agency hygiene rating where food is served on site. Prices are per child unless we say otherwise. Most soft play centres ask for socks, so pack a pair.
Soft play centres
Kensington Leisure Centre soft play, North Kensington
Better, which runs the council’s leisure centre on Silchester Road, turned part of the building into a soft play for children up to 10. Its soft play page lists a “4-way wavy open slide”, a swing ring challenge and a crawl tube, with a separate area for under-2s. Sessions last 60 minutes: £4.25 for an under-2, £8.25 for ages 2 to 10 and £5 for an extra adult, with one adult included in every child ticket. Adults must supervise. It opens seven days a week, 9am to 6pm. You do not have to book, but Better encourages booking online or in its app “to avoid disappointment”. The centre’s cafe, Better Coffee Corner, has a hygiene rating of 5 (FSA, 9 July 2025). Silchester Road, W10 6EX, near Latimer Road station.
Gambado, Sands End
Gambado calls itself a Chelsea soft play, and its address says Chelsea, but it sits on Townmead Road in Sands End, just over the border in Hammersmith and Fulham and “two minutes away” from Imperial Wharf Overground. Its own site lists a giant play frame, dodgems, an under-4s area with a baby zone and a sensory room for under-2s. Standard sessions last 1 hour 45 minutes. The play page gives prices “from” £11.50 for ages 3 to 12, £9 for ages 1 to 2 and £4 for under-1s, with adults “from” £4, plus a £2 booking fee for non-members; it says booking at least a day ahead is always cheaper. Play and Eat, with a kids’ meal for one adult and one child, is £15 on term-time weekdays. Term-time hours are 10am to 5.45pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 6pm at weekends; in school holidays it opens 9.30am to 6pm every day. A Halloween party runs on Friday 30 October, 5pm to 7pm (child £24, adult £10). Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 25 March 2026, Hammersmith and Fulham Council). 7 Station Court, Townmead Road, SW6 2PY. Call 020 7384 1635.
Snakes and Ladders, Syon Park, Brentford
The biggest soft play within reach of west London families is in the grounds of Syon Park. Its price list gives off-peak term-time prices of £12.15 for ages 2 to 4 and £13.50 for 5s and over, rising to £15.25 and £16.95 at weekends and in holidays; adults pay £5.35 off-peak and £6.60 peak. A Special Educational Needs session runs every Wednesday in term time, 4.15pm to 6.15pm. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 2 July 2026, Hounslow Council). Syon Park, Park Road, TW8 8JF.
Free and rainy-day museum play in South Kensington
The Garden, Science Museum
The Garden is the Science Museum’s play space in the basement, which the museum describes as “designed for 3-6 year olds but we welcome children of any age under this”. Children play in construction, water, light and sound areas, finding out about floating and sinking, shadows and reflections. It is free, open daily 10am to 5.30pm (Level -1). The museum does not provide waterproof aprons at the water play, so bring your own. Empty pushchairs have to be parked in the Spare Room opposite, where the locks need a £1 coin. Museum entry is free, but the museum asks visitors to book a free general admission ticket online. It is open daily 10am to 6pm, and from 9am during half term, 24 to 30 October. The Benugo-run catering has a hygiene rating of 5 (FSA, 28 February 2025). Exhibition Road, SW7 2DD.
Pattern Pod, Science Museum
On the ground floor, Pattern Pod is a free “multi-sensory area for children under nine years old” and their parents and carers. The museum says children can “explore water ripples without getting their feet wet”, make symmetrical images on touch screens and follow robot trails. It opens daily from 10am to 5.40pm (Level 0). Exhibition Road, SW7 2DD.
Wonderlab, Science Museum
Wonderlab is the museum’s paid interactive gallery on Level 3, recommended for ages 7 to 14, with 50 exhibits across seven zones including giant friction slides, a Tesla coil and a Chemistry Bar where Explainers run live shows. Day passes “vary, starting from £13.50”, and booking ahead is cheaper; under-4s go free and families of three to five people (no more than two adults) get £3 off each pass. An annual pass is £29. There are no booking fees. It is open daily from 10am to 5.40pm, but the museum says it will close at 4pm on Tuesday 8 December. Two new live shows run this half term. Exhibition Road, SW7 2DD.
Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum is free to explore and open daily from 10am to 5.50pm, last entry 5.30pm, closed 24 to 26 December. The museum warns that at weekends and in school holidays “you may have to queue to enter”; booking a free entry ticket online guarantees a place. Its visit page has a planner for families visiting with “little ones”. There is no winter ice rink in the museum grounds this year: our ice rink report has where to skate instead. Benugo’s catering at the museum has a hygiene rating of 5 (FSA, 17 December 2025). Cromwell Road, SW7 5BD.
V&A South Kensington
Admission to the V&A is free, daily 10am to 5.45pm and until 10pm on Fridays. Its families page says the Learning Centre is open and hands out “a range of free family activities everyday”, and lists digital trails for families, including Secret Seekers, a treasure hunt round the building. The cafes have children’s meal deals and highchairs, packed lunches can be eaten in the John Madejski Garden, and staff can direct you to a buggy park. Industrial action planned for 29 and 30 October has been suspended, and the museum says it is open as usual with its half-term events. Benugo’s catering has a hygiene rating of 5 (FSA, 21 November 2025). Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL.
Design Museum, Kensington High Street
The Design Museum’s collection display, Designer Maker User on Level 2, is free and needs no ticket; the paid exhibitions are best booked ahead. It opens 10am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 6pm Friday to Sunday, and closes 24 to 26 December. For older children, its families programme runs Design Camps, creative workshops for ages 7 to 14 in the half terms. The museum’s own catering has a hygiene rating of 5 (FSA, 9 January 2026). 224 to 238 Kensington High Street, W8 6AG.
Shows, climbing and rhyme times
Puppet Theatre Barge, Little Venice
The Puppet Theatre Barge calls itself “the UK’s only floating puppet theatre”, with 40 years of shows on a converted barge, moored at Little Venice. The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, told with music, songs and rod puppets, runs until 15 November for ages 3 to 7; it lasts 45 minutes with no interval, and the theatre says there is “nothing really scary”. The Three Little Wolves follows from 28 November to 7 February for ages 4 to 10. Book through its site. Its directions page warns that maps can send you to the wrong side of the canal: cross the bridge and use the gates on Blomfield Road. Opposite 35 Blomfield Road, W9 2PF, three minutes from Warwick Avenue.
Westway Climbing Centre, North Kensington
The climbing centre under the Westway, run by Everyone Active, offers Family Climbing pay and play sessions, where coaches “get the family climbing together”; it is open to novices, and juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Every junior needs a registration and consent form before climbing, which can be printed and filled in beforehand. Termly clubs include Wild Climbers for 5 and 6 year olds and the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme for 7 to 11s, and the centre runs holiday camps. The page publishes no prices; book online or call 020 8969 0992 (option two). Westway Sports and Fitness Centre, 1 Crowthorne Road, W10 6RP.
Library rhyme times and stay and play
The borough’s libraries run weekly sessions for babies and toddlers, listed on the council’s events page. At Kensington Central Library, baby rhyme time is on Mondays from 10am to 10.20am, from 2 November, and story time on Wednesdays at the same time (12 Phillimore Walk, W8 7RX). Brompton Library has baby rhyme time on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10.30am to 11am (210 Old Brompton Road, SW5 0BS). At Chelsea Library in Chelsea Old Town Hall there is stay and play on Tuesdays from 11am to noon, and story and rhyme time listed on Fridays from 11am to 11.30am (King’s Road, SW3 5EZ). All are free. At Kensington Central and Chelsea there is no need to book; Brompton asks you to book a free ticket with library staff.
How we chose
These are the indoor play places and rainy-day options families in Kensington, Chelsea and Notting Hill search for, chosen on what can be checked: the ages, prices and hours each venue publishes, the Food Standards Agency hygiene rating where food is served, and how easily families from W8, W10, W11, W14, SW3, SW5, SW7 and SW10 can reach them. The borough has only one public soft play of its own, so two of the three soft play centres are just over the border. Nothing here has a hygiene rating below 3. We left out KidZania at Westfield London and Bramley’s Big Adventure in North Kensington, both listed as closed, and membership-only clubs that publish no visitor prices. Every fact comes from the venue’s own website unless we say otherwise. Prices and session times change in the school holidays, so check before you set off.
