Carols in the Wren Chapel on 9 and 17 Dec at £75, a free dementia-inclusive day on 15 Dec, £8 puppet shows and 19 Pensioner Singers dates across Chelsea.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea has published its Christmas programme, and most of it is aimed at getting people through the gates to meet the Chelsea Pensioners. There are two candlelit carol services in the Wren Chapel, a free day for older residents and people living with dementia, a weekend of children’s activities in the Soane Stable Yard, and nearly twenty carol dates for the Pensioner Singers in Chelsea pubs and beyond.
Every ticket, the hospital says, goes towards “a home, care and comradeship for Army veterans in their later years”. It describes the season as “a packed programme of festive events designed to bring people together, celebrate the season and support the veterans who call the historic site home” (Royal Hospital Chelsea, Christmas events 2026).

Christmas at Soane Stable Yard: 12 and 13 December
The weekend of 12 and 13 December is for families. The hospital lists three things at the Soane Stable Yard, all entered via Chelsea Gate:
- Design a Christmas card for a Chelsea Pensioner, both days, sessions from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Children make a card that is then delivered to a Pensioner. It is free and drop-in, with no booking, and parents must stay with their children (event page).
- ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, storytelling with puppets led by Chelsea Pensioners in a Christmas-themed room. Each session lasts 30 minutes and takes 15 children; the Sunday sessions are at 11am and 1pm. Tickets are £8 per child, adults free, one adult per child (event page).
- Carols with the Chelsea Pensioner Singers, Sunday 13 December, 2pm to 2.45pm, “supported by Elaine Hillier”. Free, but you need to book; carol sheets are handed out so everyone can sing (event page).
The release also mentions guided tours of the hospital over the weekend and “festive treats from Heidi Bakery”.

What it means for you
- Carol Service tickets are £75 and the chapel doors close at 7pm. If that is more than you want to spend, the Soane Stable Yard carols on 13 December are free, though they still need booking, and the Singers’ pub dates cost nothing beyond your drink.
- If you care for an older relative or someone living with dementia, the 15 December day is free and built for you both, but places are limited, so contact the outreach team early.
- With young children, the card-making on 12 and 13 December needs no ticket; the puppet shows take 15 children a session at £8.
- Ranelagh Gardens is shut to daytime walkers while the Winter Village is on; the village opens free from 4.30pm.
- For other carols across the borough, including the Mayor’s service on 9 December, see our Kensington carol services list.

About the Royal Hospital Chelsea
The Royal Hospital has been home to the Chelsea Pensioners, retired soldiers of the British Army, since 1692, on a 66-acre site off Royal Hospital Road, SW3. It is a charity (number 1076414) and runs a Veterans Outreach programme that, it says, “works to combat loneliness and isolation by strengthening connections with older veterans across the UK”. Earlier this month we reported on its call for café volunteers and on Roy’s 1,000-mile Scarlet Wheels ride.
