Cadogan's own 2026 calendar still says only November for the King's Road switch-on. Here is what it was in 2025, 2024 and 2023, and when the date usually lands.
If you are trying to pin down the date of the Chelsea Christmas lights switch-on, the honest answer today is that Cadogan has not published it. Its own 2026 events calendar lists the Christmas Lights Switch-On under “November” with the line “Further details to be shared soon” (Cadogan). Every other event on that calendar, from Chinese New Year to Chelsea Dog Day, has a date against it. This one does not.
Cadogan’s consumer site, InChelsea, listed the Chelsea Arts Festival, the Chelsea History Festival and Chelsea Dog Day on 3 September, with no Christmas entry at all.
When it has fallen before
Cadogan runs the event, and it has always been a Saturday in the middle of November:
| Year | Date | Day |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 15 November | Saturday |
| 2024 | 16 November | Saturday |
| 2023 | 18 November | Saturday |
Sources: King’s Road, 2025, Cadogan, 2024 and Duke of York Square, 2023.
On that pattern the 2026 event lands on Saturday 14 or Saturday 21 November, but nobody has said so, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. We will update this page the day Cadogan puts a date on it.
What the day actually is
It is not a five minute ceremony. In 2025 it ran from late morning, with the lights themselves going on at 5pm. From the organiser’s own listing:
- The King’s Road is part-pedestrianised from Sloane Square to Walpole Street
- A Christmas market, plus pop-up stalls from local businesses on the King’s Road and Pavilion Road
- A continual programme of performances across a main stage at Duke of York Square and the King’s Road bandstand, with roaming entertainment around the neighbourhood
- At 5pm, Father Christmas switches on the lights from the main stage at Duke of York Square, with a local child helping
- Free admission
In 2024 the same event added a third stage next to the Sloane Square Winter Pavilion and, for the first time, performances along Sloane Street. Cadogan said footfall that day was up by more than 58 per cent, and the day raised money for the Kensington + Chelsea Foundation’s winter appeal.
The lights stay on long after the switch-on
The switch-on is one afternoon; the displays run for weeks. In 2024 Cadogan published the detail: Sloane Street carried a scheme by lighting designer James Glancy inspired by the mulberry trees of Cadogan Place Gardens, with just under 34km of lighting and almost 312,000 LEDs. Sloane Square had a Winter Pavilion open Wednesdays to Saturdays from 16 November to 21 December, with a pop-up cafe bar run with the Royal Court Theatre. Duke of York Square was themed on the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Assume something on that scale again, but treat the specifics as unconfirmed until Cadogan publishes this year’s.
Road closures
The pedestrianisation of the King’s Road between Sloane Square and Walpole Street is the part that catches drivers out, and it is in place for most of the day, not just at 5pm. No traffic order for 2026 has been advertised yet, because there is no date yet. Check roadworks and travel in Kensington in the week before, and if you must drive, read our page on parking in Kensington and Chelsea first. Sloane Square station is the obvious way in and it gets very busy from about 4pm.
What we checked, and when
All of the above was verified on 3 September 2026 against Cadogan’s own calendar, its 2024 event write-up, the King’s Road listing for 2025 and the Duke of York Square announcement for 2023. Note that dukeofyorksquare.com now redirects visitors to inchelsea.co.uk, and its 2023 Christmas page is still live and still reads as an announcement, so do not take a date off it.
