No Tube or rail closures are published yet for Kensington over Christmas 2026. What ran last year, bank holiday parking rules, and when timetables land.
If you are planning a Christmas journey from Kensington, the honest position on 25 September is that nothing has been closed yet. National Rail’s Christmas and New Year page for 2026/27 exists, covers Thursday 24 December to Monday 4 January, and names exactly one piece of work so far, and it is in Birmingham. Transport for London’s status feed for the District, Circle, Piccadilly, Central, Elizabeth and Overground lines shows no planned closures for that window. What is known is the pattern, because both organisations run the same shape every year, and the dates on which the detail arrives.
The quick answer
Christmas Day (Friday 25 December): no Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line or bus service is the long-standing rule, confirmed again by TfL last December. Christmas Eve runs, but finishes early. Boxing Day has no Elizabeth line and gaps elsewhere. New Year’s Eve runs all night, and New Year’s Day is a Sunday service. National Rail says train operators start adding their Christmas detail from the beginning of October, and its last-trains guide for Christmas Eve is published in late November or early December. On the bank holidays, Kensington and Chelsea’s pay-by-phone bays are free and resident bays are unrestricted.
What National Rail has published
National Rail’s summary for the period runs “from Thursday 24 December 2026 until Monday 4 January 2027 inclusive”. It says train services on many routes will finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve, that its guide to the last trains leaving London “will be published here late November / early December”, and that operator-by-operator service information “will start being added to the pages from the beginning of October onwards” (National Rail, Christmas and New Year 2026/27 travel summary). The only major work named so far is a five-day closure of Birmingham New Street from Thursday 24 to Monday 28 December, which matters here only if you are heading to the West Midlands.
For Kensington that leaves the two questions that will decide most journeys unanswered until October: whether the West London line through West Brompton and Kensington Olympia is affected, and what the operators out of Paddington, Victoria, Waterloo and Euston do between Christmas and New Year. The everyday picture of which lines serve which local station is on our trains and travel page.
What TfL did last Christmas, and will announce again
TfL published its festive plan on 2 December 2025, and it is the best guide to the shape of 2026 until the new one appears (TfL press release, 2 December 2025):
| Day | 2025/26 arrangement |
|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | Services ran but finished early |
| Christmas Day | No service on the majority of public transport |
| Boxing Day | No service on some parts of the network, including the Elizabeth line |
| Weekdays 22 December to 2 January | DLR ran a Saturday timetable; other modes ran planned closures around a normal timetable |
| New Year’s Eve | Services ran all night, with some central stations closed at short notice for crowding |
| New Year’s Day | Sunday service on the Underground, buses and trams |
TfL also suspended the central London Congestion Charge from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day, with charging back on 2 January, while the ULEZ applied as normal except on Christmas Day. Its planned-closures list for the same period sat behind the tfl.gov.uk/christmas-travel address; on 25 September that address still redirects to the general major works page, which lists nothing beyond November. We checked TfL’s own status feed for 24 December to 4 January on the District, Circle, Piccadilly, Central, Elizabeth, Mildmay and Windrush lines, and every one returned “Good Service” with no validity periods, meaning no closure has been entered yet. Weekend closures in the run-up are tracked on our roadworks and travel page.
Parking on the bank holidays
Three of the days are bank or public holidays: Christmas Day, the substitute holiday for Boxing Day on Monday 28 December, and New Year’s Day. On those days the council’s rules are that pay-by-phone bays are free, including the Holland Park car park, resident permit bay restrictions do not apply, and single yellow lines are not enforced unless a vehicle is obstructing traffic. Single yellow lines that normally operate on Sundays are also switched off on Christmas Day. Double yellow lines apply every day, and a parking suspension sign overrides all of the above, including on bank holidays (RBKC, bank holiday parking). Saturday 26 December is not itself a public holiday in the council’s list, so ordinary Saturday rules apply that day. The full tariff and permit rules are on our parking page, and the bin days over the same period are on our Christmas bins page.
Dates to watch
- From early October: train operators add their Christmas timetables to National Rail’s page. We will check the West London line and the Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo routes first.
- Late November or early December: National Rail’s last-trains-on-Christmas-Eve guide.
- Early December: TfL’s festive plan and its line-by-line closures list. Last year’s arrived on 2 December.
This page will be updated at each of those points.
