Ranelagh Gardens closes to the public from 17 November until the site is handed back on 5 January. Trail tickets start at £18, the village itself is free.

Ranelagh Gardens will be off limits to daytime visitors for seven weeks this winter. The event team behind Chelsea Winter Village moves into the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s park on 17 November and does not hand the site back until 5 January.

Between those dates the park is open only when the event is. The organiser, Proud Events, puts it plainly: “The park is inaccessible to the general public outside of event opening hours.” (Proud Events, Chelsea Winter Village community consultation page)

The Royal Hospital says the same thing in its own words. Ranelagh Gardens “are closed to the public throughout late November and December while the Winter Village and Illuminations take place”, though the village part can be visited free from 4.30pm daily. The dates that matter

  • 17 to 25 November: build. The event team is on site in Ranelagh Gardens.
  • 26 November: first night, according to the organiser’s own schedule.
  • 5 January: the site is handed back to the Royal Hospital.

That is 49 days, seven weeks to the day, during which the gardens are an event site rather than a park.

The organiser publishes the open nights in five blocks:

Chelsea Winter Village opening dates, as published by Proud Events
DatesTimes
26 to 30 November4.30pm to 10pm (Wed to Fri), midday to 10pm (Sat and Sun)
3 to 7 December4.30pm to 10pm (Wed to Fri), midday to 10pm (Sat and Sun)
10 to 14 December4.30pm to 10pm (Wed to Fri), midday to 10pm (Sat and Sun)
17 to 21 December4.30pm to 10pm (Wed to Fri), midday to 10pm (Sat and Sun)
22 to 28 December4.30pm to 10pm (Mon to Fri), midday to 10pm (Sat and Sun). Not open Christmas Day

Those are the organiser’s own figures, reproduced as published. Its own booking site puts the closing times slightly later, with the trail shutting at 10pm and the village at 11pm, so treat 10pm as the last entry rather than the last drink.

There is one conflict in the published dates, and it is worth knowing before you book. The Royal Hospital’s page says the run is “25th November - 28th December 2026”. The operator’s own resident information says the team builds until 25 November “in order to build and get the event ready to open on the 26th November”, and its day-by-day schedule starts on 26 November. Neither page has been amended to match the other. The operator’s is the more detailed of the two, so we have used its dates above, but check your ticket before travelling on 25 November.

What is actually in it

The ticketed part is Chelsea Winter Illuminations, a 1.5km light trail through the gardens with large-scale light art and soundscapes. The free part is the village itself, which the Royal Hospital lists as including:

  • a Christmas market of independent traders
  • mulled wine and festive bars
  • marshmallow fire pits
  • a covered stage with choirs and acoustic sets
  • fairground rides
  • eight lanes at a curling club

Tickets for the trail start at £18 an adult and £37.50 for a family of four. Under-threes go free but still need a ticket. The village is free to enter and needs no ticket at all. (Chelsea Winter Village tickets)

Which gate you use depends on what you have booked. Ticket holders for the Illuminations and the curling go in through London Gate. Anyone heading for the free village uses Barrack Gate. No other part of the Royal Hospital is open to event visitors.

If you live nearby

This is the second year of the event, which grew out of Christmas in Chelsea in 2024. It runs under the Royal Hospital’s own premises licence, which covers regulated entertainment and the sale of food and alcohol.

Security is on site 24 hours a day for the whole occupation, and the organiser says it will brief the police on its security plans and provide extra bins and continuous litter picking while it holds the gardens.

During the event itself there is a phone line for neighbours on 077503 372 169, staffed 3pm to 10pm Wednesday to Friday and 11am to 10pm at weekends. Outside the event, enquiries go to info@chelseawintervillage.com. The Royal Hospital has said it is not the first point of contact for anything to do with the Winter Village.

What it means for you

If you use Ranelagh Gardens as a park, plan around losing it from 17 November. It comes back on 5 January. In between, the gates open only for the event: from 4.30pm Wednesday to Friday and from midday at weekends, and not at all on the days the event does not run.

If you are going, book the trail rather than turning up. The operator says walk-up availability exists but is not guaranteed, and evening entry is timed.

If you are travelling in, Sloane Square is the nearest Underground station, on the District and Circle lines, and the 170 bus stops outside the Hospital. Parking around Royal Hospital Road is limited at the best of times; our guide to parking in Kensington covers the permit and visitor rules, and Kensington roadworks and travel carries anything live on the roads.
